To the Parents and Community of Waimata School
These are the findings of the Education Review Office’s latest report on Waimata School.
Waimata School is located in a rural area south of Waihi. It currently has a roll of 43 students, of whom nine identify as Māori. Since the last review there have been major changes to the membership of staff and the board of trustees. A first-time principal was appointed in the second term of 2009.
In 2010, a majority of students were reading and writing at nationally expected levels. Good progress has been made in numeracy during the year, with most students achieving at expected levels by mid-year. Māori students are achieving to school expectations in writing, and comparably with non-Māori students in numeracy, but do not achieve at expected levels in reading. A range of support programmes is provided for students who are at risk of not succeeding. The board is well informed about student achievement and progress.
Teachers have high expectations of students. They have established an inclusive school culture which is founded on the curriculum values of empathy, integrity and equity. Teacher’s use their knowledge of the achievement of individual students to set learning goals, monitor their progress, and identify those needing extra learning support. Students enjoy participating in school life, and are thoughtful, caring and sensitive.
The school is continuing to develop the Waimata Curriculum. It considers its priority is to put together guidelines for teaching that recognise parents’ aspirations for their children, and make further use of assessment information to promote student engagement, achievement and progress.
The principal uses her skills as an experienced teacher and educational leader to support and guide staff and provide direction for ongoing school development and improvement. Her positive relationships with the school community are establishing a growing partnership for learning.
The board of trustees shares her vision for the school and is committed to promoting student success.
